in Kazbegi

The essential Kazbegi day for travelers making the round trip from Tbilisi. Focused, energetic, and covering the single highlight that defines the region.

05:30 — 08:30 · Travel

Depart Tbilisi, drive the Military Highway

An early start is essential to beat afternoon cloud cover on the peak. The 3–4 hour drive is scenic from the start — stop briefly at Ananuri Fortress on the turquoise Zhinvali Reservoir, and pause at the Jvari Pass viewpoint (2,395m) for the first dramatic mountain panorama.

09:00 — 12:30 · Hiking

Hike to Gergeti Trinity Church

Begin the trail from Stepantsminda village at the signed trailhead below the church. The route climbs steadily along a ridgeline with Mount Kazbek visibility improving with every ascent. Allow 2–2.5 hours up and 1.5 hours down. Spend time at the church exploring the exterior, the hilltop plateau, and the views toward the glacier.

Pro Tip

If pressed for time or physically unable to hike, hire a 4×4 from the village for ~30 GEL per person to drive to the church. The trail is not the only option.

13:00 — 14:30 · Lunch

Lunch in Stepantsminda

Return to town for lunch at a local guesthouse or café. Try khinkali (Georgian dumplings), lobiani, or a simple plate of bread, cheese, and bean stew. Many guesthouses serve fresh food without advance booking — look for handwritten signs or ask locals.

15:00 — 17:00 · Scenic

Dariali Gorge & Monastery Drive

Drive 15 minutes north along the Military Highway toward the Russian border to see the dramatic walls of Dariali Gorge. The Dariali Monastery is visible at the base of a cliff. Return to Stepantsminda and allow 30 minutes to walk through the town center before departure.

17:30 — 21:00 · Return

Return Drive to Tbilisi

The evening return drive is relaxed. Stop at Gudauri if the light is good for the high-pass view. Arrive Tbilisi 20:30–21:30 depending on stops and border traffic near Dariali.

Itinerary 02

Weekend Escape to Kazbegi

Two full days reveals a different side of the region. This plan includes Gergeti, a valley excursion, and the unhurried pace that Kazbegi truly rewards.

Afternoon

Return to town for lunch. Take the short Gveleti Waterfall walk in the afternoon (2–3 hours total). Return for dinner at your guesthouse.

Truso Valley's travertine mineral springs in early morning
Day Two

Truso Valley & Return

Early Morning

Rise at dawn for the early morning light on Kazbek from the guesthouse or the hillside above town. Then a good breakfast before the Truso excursion.

Morning to Afternoon

Full-day jeep excursion to Truso Valley (~40km each way). See the mineral springs, ruined villages, and glacier views. Walk to the upper springs on foot if conditions allow.

Late Afternoon

Return to Stepantsminda by 16:00. Brief stop at Dariali Gorge on the downward drive before heading back to Tbilisi. Arrive Tbilisi ~20:00–21:00.

Itinerary 03

The Military Highway Road Trip

This plan treats the journey as part of the destination. Drive northward through the heartland of Georgian mountain scenery with multiple stops, arriving in Kazbegi as the road trip's natural crescendo.

01

Tbilisi → Mtskheta (30 min)

The ancient capital, visible from the highway. Sveti Tskhoveli Cathedral in morning light. Coffee and a slow start to the drive.

02

Mtskheta → Ananuri (45 min)

Ananuri Fortress and Zhinvali Reservoir. Walk the castle ramparts for sweeping water views. Allow 45 minutes here.

03

Ananuri → Gudauri Pass (1 hr)

Climb to the Jvari Pass (2,395m). Stop at the Friends of Georgia Monument for panoramic views of the valley and approaching high Caucasus ridgelines.

04

Gudauri → Kazbegi (1 hr)

The descent through the high road with alpine views opens into the Terek gorge. The valley broadens and Gergeti Church appears above. Arrival in Stepantsminda feels earned.

Itinerary 04

Kazbegi for Hikers

A 3-day hiking-focused itinerary with a balance of accessible trails and more demanding alpine routes. Assumes a moderate fitness level and comfort with high elevation.

Day 1

Arrival + Gergeti Church Hike

Arrive Kazbegi by noon. Afternoon hike to Gergeti (4–5 hrs round trip). Rest and meal at guesthouse. Altitude acclimatization begins naturally at 1,740m town elevation.

Day 2

Juta Valley & Chaukhi Trek

Transfer to Juta Village (2,180m). Full day trek toward Chaukhi Massif, Abudelauri Lakes (2,900m). Return to Stepantsminda by evening. This is the most demanding day — allow 7–9 hours on trail.

Day 3

Bethlemi Hut Approach (optional) + Depart

For experienced trekkers: hire a guide and approach Mount Kazbek to the Bethlemi Hut at 3,650m for glacier views. For others: morning Gveleti Waterfall walk, then pack and drive back to Tbilisi.
