The most popular route in Kazbegi — and rightfully so. The trail climbs from the village via a ridgeline path to the 14th-century church at 2,170m, with panoramic views of Mount Kazbek and the entire valley. No guide needed. Start before 8am in summer to avoid midday heat and afternoon cloud cover.
One of the most striking landscapes in the entire Caucasus. Truso Valley features travertine mineral springs with orange-tinted pools, abandoned villages, and glacier views deep into the range. Accessible only by 4×4 along the Terek River. Best arranged through local guides or tour operators in Stepantsminda.
Drive or take a marshrutka to the remote village of Juta (2,180m), then hike through alpine meadows toward the dramatic Chaukhi Massif — a jagged granite formation that draws comparison to the Dolomites. The route to Lake Abudelauri and back is one of the most rewarding hikes in the region.
The approach to Kazbegi along the Georgian Military Highway passes through Dariali Gorge — a narrow, imposing canyon cut by the Terek River where the walls rise hundreds of meters on either side. The Dariali Monastery sits dramatically at the gorge entrance. Worth slowing down for, even as a stop on the way in from Tbilisi.
A popular and accessible short hike from Stepantsminda to two impressive waterfalls — Gveleti Lower (20m) and Gveleti Upper (40m). The trail winds through mixed forest with mountain views opening along the way. A good option for those who want a scenic walk without the full commitment of the Gergeti hike.
Built in the 14th century as a refuge for Georgian royal treasures, the Tsminda Sameba (Holy Trinity) church is one of the most revered sites in the country. The interior is simple and atmospheric. The surrounding hilltop plateau offers 360-degree mountain views. Dress modestly — this is an active religious site.
Kazbegi is one of the most photographed places in the Caucasus for good reason. Key vantage points include the Stepantsminda viewpoint above the church, the valley floor looking up toward the ridge, and the meadows of Gergeti in early morning mist. The classic shot — church framing the peak — is best at dawn with a telephoto lens from below.
The best food in Kazbegi is often in family guesthouses rather than restaurants. Highland specialties include lobiani (bean-filled bread), shkmeruli (pan-fried chicken in garlic sauce), mtsvadi (Georgian shashlik), and fresh churchkhela. Try local cheese — produced from herds you'll have seen grazing on the slopes that same morning.
The route from Tbilisi to Kazbegi via the Georgian Military Highway is itself one of the great mountain drives of the Caucasus. Stop at Ananuri Fortress on Zhinvali Reservoir, climb through Gudauri ski resort (great viewpoints even in summer), and cross the Jvari Pass before descending into the Kazbegi valley. Allow a full morning for the drive.

For Gergeti hike: go at dawn. Clouds often roll in by midday, obscuring the peak. Truso Valley: an early start avoids afternoon crowd and allows comfortable return before dusk.
Truso and beyond are only accessible by serious 4×4. Local drivers know river crossings and road conditions. Ask at your guesthouse — many can arrange transport directly.
Mountain weather changes fast above 2,000m. Even on clear summer days, bring a windproof layer, sun protection, and water. A daypack with basics makes every excursion more comfortable.
Gergeti Trinity Church is a working place of worship. Dress modestly (shoulders and knees covered). Keep voices low and cameras unobtrusive when services are underway.

For a first visit: hike to Gergeti Church at dawn, walk the Gveleti Waterfall trail in the afternoon, and spend an evening eating at a local guesthouse. If you have a second day, the Truso Valley jeep excursion is unmissable. The Military Highway drive is automatic if arriving from Tbilisi.
Yes. The Gveleti Waterfall walk is gentle and accessible. Gergeti Church can be visited by 4×4 rather than on foot. The Dariali Gorge drive requires no hiking at all. Scenic picnics in the meadows below the church are also popular with families.
